A Guide to the Jewish Collections at UT Austin

Joan and Stanford Alexander South Texas Jewish Archives

Founded in 2017 to rescue documents, photographs, and other archival materials related to Jewish life in Houston that were endangered by the flooding of Hurricane Harvey. Housed at the Woodson Research Center, Fondren Library, Rice University, the archive collects, preserves, and provides public access to materials documenting Jewish life in Greater Houston and South Texas.

Texas History Navigator (App)

A free mobile app published by the Texas Historical Commission (THC) that helps you find and explore Texas heritage sites, including many with Jewish historical significance across the state.

What it does:

• Interactive map of over 18,000 official Texas historical markers and sites
• Audio and text descriptions for each site
• Custom trip planning to build your own historical route
• Points, badges, and check-ins for sites you've visited
• Social media sharing of the markers and sites you discover

How to get it:

iPhone/iPad: search “Texas History Navigator” on the Apple App Store

Android: search “Texas History Navigator” on the Google Play Store

How to use it:

Open the app and allow location access to see historical markers near you on the map, or search/browse statewide. Tap any marker for its full text and audio description, add sites to a custom trip, and check in once you've visited to earn points and badges.

Walk of the Town ATX (App)

A free, self-guided audio tour app produced by Leadership Austin in partnership with the City of Austin Heritage Tourism Division, Downtown Austin Alliance, Preservation Austin, and Visit Austin. It narrates the history of downtown Austin and its landmarks, including 6th Street and the Texas State Capitol grounds.

What it does:

• Four self-guided tour routes through downtown Austin
• Narrated stops with historic photographs dating back to the early 1900s
• Interactive map for navigating between stops at your own pace

How to use it:

Download the app and choose one of the four downtown routes. Follow the narrated directions between stops, or use the built-in interactive map to explore at your own pace.
